Metallic Schiff base complexes are of considerable interest because of the variable structures and potential application in luminescence, magnetic property, electrochemistry and catalyst functional material. Their synthesis, characterization, structure determination, optics, electrochemistry, magnetism and catalyst had been studied.H2L (N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine) were selected as the ligand and 21 kinds of Schiff base lanthanide complexes have been synthesized in this paper. The complexes have been characterized by Elemental analyses, Thermal gravimetric, XRD, Infrared (IR) and Ultraviolet-Visible (UV). Five complexes'single crystal structures have been developed by diffusion and have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crysrallographic analysis; they are complexes of 1, 3, 4, 6 and 22. The composition of complexes which were synthesized by reaction of Schiff base and hydrate lanthanide nitrate accord with [Ln(H2L)2(NO3)3]n [Ln = La (1)], [Ln(H2L)2(NO3)3]2 [Ln = Pr (2), Nd (3), Eu (5), Gd (6), Tb (7) and Dy (8)], [Ln(H2L)(NO3)3(CH3OH)]2 [Ln = Sm (4) and Er (9)]. The composition of complexes which were synthesized by reaction of Schiff base and hydrate lanthanide chloride accord with [Ln(H2L)2Cl3·2CH3OH] [Ln = La (10), Pr (11), Nd (12), Sm (13), Eu (14), Gd (15), Tb (16), Er (17) and Lu (18)]. The composition of complexes which were synthesized by reaction of Schiff base and nonaqueous lanthanide chloride accord with [Ln(H2L)2Cl3·2CH3OH] [Ln = La (19), Nd (20) and Lu (21)]. The composition of complexes which were synthesized by reaction of Schiff base and hydrate manganese chloride accord with [MnLCl] (22). Single-crystal X-ray crysrallographic analyses show that the complex 1 is a novel one-dimensional double-chain structure. The complexes 3, 4 and 6 are novel 0-dimensional dimeric structure and the complex 22 is 0-dimensional structure. Furthermore, the fluorescence spectra analyses show that the luminescence of complexes is ligand-centered emission, except the complexes 4, 5 and 17 are lanthanide ion and ligand-centered emission. Conductivity measurements show that complexes behaved as electrolytes in MeOH and CH3CN. Catalyst measurements show that the complexes 19-21 can catalyze styrene polymerization. The variable-temperature magnetic properties of complex 6 have been investigated over the temperature range 2-300 K at 500 Oe. The complex 6 shows an antiferromagnetic interaction existing between metallicions.
