Furniture, as necessary articles in our life, has experienced tremendous renewals in terms of model, style, technology, material. It is a sign of human civilization, closely connected with such elements as politics, economy, art, life of human society. Contemporary research on Chinese furniture history elaborates too much on the parts of art, model and technology. However, rarely a complete and systematic research is done from perspectives of chinese social background, cultural background, aesthetic features, technological features, style and model combined. Besides, most of the research done is limited to the history before the foundation of Republic of China. In view of the foregoing reasons, the thesis gives a complete review of the development and evolution of Chinese furniture since the foundation of Republic of China.The thesis is composed of four parts. In the first part, the restrictive elements in the field and the reconstruction of it from 1950s to 1960s is analysed. In the aspects of the social background, the design to meet basic functions, style and technological categories, this period of furniture evolution is reviewed. In the second part, explorations done in this field and its continuous development is presented from the 1970s to 1980s. The special historical context, modern furniture design under aesthetic ideological form, the inheritance and innovation of traditional technology are taken into consideration. In the third part, the outstanding qualities typical of the period from the 1990s till now, such as prosperity, egoism, vogue are demonstrated. The influence of postmodernism and the manifestation of technology is highlighted. In the last part, the present situation of Chinese furniture is analysed and a discussion is made to find a way out in the furniture design of china.
