Doped Wo <sub> 3 </ Sub> Photocatalytic Materials Preparation, Characterization And Activity Study

To design and prepare catalysts with strong absorption and high photoactivity for water splitting is the key to utilize the solar energy. In this study, we investigated thoroughly the preparation condition of some rare earth and non-metal doping WO3 and the effects of dopants on its photocatalytic activity.Y or Nd mono-doped WO3 samples were prepared by solid state reaction. The crystal structure and components of photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS, DRS. It was found that the non-doped WO3 had a oxygen production rate at 0.047mmol·L-1·h-1·g-1 under visible light irradiation, while the modified WO3 photocatalysts had a better photoactivity: when the dopant amount was up to 0.05% (wt.),both of the Y doped and Nd doped WO3 represented the best photoactivity with a oxygen production rate 0.081mmol·L-1·h-1·g-1 and 0.103 mmol·L-1·h-1·g-1correspondingly. Under the UV-light irradiation, the oxygen production rate of non-doped WO3 was 0.060 mmol·L-1·h-1·g-1, while the WO3 doped with Y at the ratio of 0.20% (wt.) represented the highest oxygen production rate 0.109 mmol·L-1·h-1·g-1. WO3 doped with 0.50% Nd had a high photoactivity of 0.097 mmol·L-1·h-1·g-1.In the mono-doped foundation, this paper used S-Y, S-N, and La-Y three kinds of systems to codope the tungsten trioxide. All of these samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS, DRS. And the photoactivity of these codoped samples were investigated under the visible light irradiation. The results showed that none of the codoped samples had a lower photoactivity than the unmodified WO3. Even the S/Y codoped WO3 had a higher photoactivity than S mono-doped WO3, and S/N codoped WO3 had a higher photoactivity than N mono-doped WO3. But La/Y codoped WO3 represented worse than WO3 mono-doped with La or Y, that may be because there were no synergistic effect on La and Y.
