Recently, Schiff bases as ligands and their complexes are the most important fieldsdue to their various structures and potential applications in the asymmetric catalysis, bioactivities, and functional materials. Therefore, we designed and synthesized twotypes of Schiff bases, i.e., o-aminophenols and salicyclic aldehydes. In the paper, westudied the influence of different substitutional group on the synthesis, coordinationcapability and optical property. Their coordination complexes were subsequentlyprepared. The main work is described as follows. Twenty-one Schiff bases were synthesizedhomogeneously in solvents and heterogeneously (microwave irradiation and grindingmethod). These compounds were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR spectrumand MALDI-TOF-MS. Two coordination complexes were measured by single crystalX-ray diffraction. Their optical properties (UV-vis and fluorescence) were investigated.Further, L11 and L12 shown photochromic property, which was ascribed to the cis-transtransformation.
