Using dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC) and acrylamide (AM) as starting materials, Span80-Tween80 composite emulsif ier and K2S2O8-NaHSO3 redox initiator, the polyDMDAAC-AM(PDA) latex was prepared by inverse emulsion polymerization. The influences on the stability of emulsion was studied. The optimal emulsifying effect could be obtained at the following condition : the mass ratio of two emulsifiers Span80:Tween80 = 2.5:1 and the volume ratio of oil to water = 1.2:1. The influences of various factors, such as reaction temperature, the mole ratio of two monomers n(DMDAAC) :n(AM) and the oil-phase medium on the performance of PDA latex were studied. The results shows that the specific viscosity and the stability of the PDA latex are concerned to the condition of copolymerization. The PDA latex' s performance of flocculation was also studied. When the PDA latex was prepared at the following condition : paraffin liquid as oil-phase medium, reaction temperature 35 °C, the mole ratio of two monomers n(DMDAAC) :n(AM) = 6:4, which has the best flocculation ability for the suspension system of kaolin. The apparent viscosity was increased by treating fresh water mud or salt water mud with the PDA latex.
