YAG (YSGG) crystals are widely used and important laser host materials. At present, these rare earth doped crystals widely used now are fabricated by the Czochralski (CZ) method which cost much, difficult to fabrication, sluggish growth, low dopant concentration and difficult to growth large size single crystal doped equality. The output power of the laser is difficult to improve owing to the size of the single crystal, so widely applications of these crystals are limited in some areas. In the year 2000, the scholars J. Lu, etc. from institute for laser science (university of electro-communications) developed Nd.YAG ceramics laser that is comparable in efficiency with Nd:YAG single crystal laser. The slop efficiency and optical-to-optical conversion efficiency can reach 57.6% and 52.7% respectively. The key to prepare highly transparent ceramics is to get good quality powders which satisfy average particles, high purity, dispersed well. Another, good quality nano-powders is the best raw material for crystal growth. On the basis of summarizing and analyzing the preparation of nano-materials and technology related to YAG (YSGG), we synthesized YAG and YSGG nanocrystal powders by sol-gel method, and rare earth doped YAG (YSGG) materials were also studied in this paper. Different characterization methods were used in our experiment to study the relationship of heat-treated temperature and microstructure, properties. Some innovative results were got in this study. The contents of the thesis are as follows:1. Y(NO3)3·6H2O, Al(NO3)3·9H2O and citric acid were used as raw materials, transparent YAG gel was obtained by sol-gel method. The gels were heat-treated at different temperatures. Well crystallized YAG nano-powders were formed at 900°C through X-ray characterization. In contrast to the conventional single crystal...
