To adapt for the development of apparel industry, Clothing Design and Engineering was opened in many academies from 1980s. This specialty was quickly developed and formed different characteristic in different academies during the past twenty years. Garment pattern was regarded as a core subject of it and also quickly developed. From all of the above we can see that pattern is attached importance to in garment education, but we can also discover many problems that are worth thinking carefully if we analyze its present condition calmly. As we all know, any knowledge should be imparted practically and realistically, the foundation of which should be definitized, the principle of which .should be taught clearly, the rule of which should be grasped. Garment pattern is the product of garment industrialization and should be necessarily imparted to student in garment education. But some people put garment pattern into the field of garment design and look on pattern making as garment design, and what's more, regarding pattern making and garment structure design as the same conception. All kinds of change caused by different sketches is paid largely attention to in the process of studying pattern making, but the rule of pattern making is ignored. The blindness existing in garment education is reflected by above phenomena, which will make the garment education deviate the right orientation and baffle the development of garment education, so more attention should be paid and more arguments should be taken.This paper is mainly composed of two parts, one of which is about the theory of pattern; the other is about the research of the method of pattern making. The attribute and knowledge connotation of garment pattern are analyzed principally in the first part of this paper. Pattern is the important part of clothing cutting craft, the foundation of which is to offer criterion for clothing cutting, the attribute of which is techniques and doesn't belong to design. The misunderstanding that pattern making and garment structure design is same conception is rectified through analysis in this part. In the second part, the method of pattern making is discussed and concluded that the basic principle of pattern making is three-dimensional contouring switching to plane figure. The constitution, rule of change and basis of making of the contour line of garment pattern are analyzed concretely connecting with the different style of garment, which points out the basic principle for studying garment pattern making.
