The measurement of the size of cutting tools based on digital image processing technology is a convenient method because it has high precision and can overcome many shortages encountered in traditional methods. This paper introduces an automatic image-analysis system for measurement of cutting tools and also discusses the basic principle of size measurement by using CCD measurement system. The function of the software module developed to automatic measuring the size of cutting tools was presented.The system is mainly based on the technology of image analysis as well as image identification, which can simultaneously realize both the automatic size measurement and data statistic management. All of the data are managed and useful curves are obtained after the rapid measurement process with reliable and accurate results.In order to meet the accurate measurement need, a method using Digital Camera was developed to measure the size of cutting tools and the detail of B-spline is described. Experimental results show that system is capable of realizing quick, accurate and non-contact size measurement, with an error of less than ±1.5% and feasibility of the approach proposed in the paper Profile of a cutting tool detection is important in image processing. This paper made a summary and analysis of detecting algorithm and edge detector. A new sub-pixel measuring method is presented, which confirms the approximate position of edge by conventional template arithmetic, and the gets the precise position of edge by curve approach. This method can obtain sub-pixel locating precision without the sacrifice of the needed speed according to the coarse and precise location. The exact positions of objects are obtained by method of profile curve fitting with minimum mean square error fitting. B-spline Function is adopted under the consideration of its prominent performance.All types of error sources and their influences existing in the presented technology are discussed in detail, and the means to reduce or eliminate the errors are suggested.
