Firstly, the essential design method of internal mixing airblast atomizer is developed. The structure design and the material selection of the atomizer are analyzed as well. Then, the study about the spray characteristics of internal mixing atomizer is obtained. Many factors such as geometrical size, operating condition and liquid viscosity have been experimentally investigated. A series of internal mixing airblast atomizer for heavy oil application were designed and investigated. Good data were obtained which can be used for the design of such kind atomizers. By properly choosing the configuration and geometrical dimensions of the atomizer, also by choosing suitable values for mixing chamber pressure, air-liquid ratio, it is possible to have very fine spray and desirable flame length. This type of atomizer has already been put into industrial operation, and fuel oil consumption dropped to 93 percentages of original consumption in atmospheric and vaccum furnaces in crude distillation. In the last part, the mechanism of effervescent atomization is used to deign three times atomizer. The characteristics of flow rate, atomization and combustion test were carried out. The test results prove that the atomizer designed is very good in atomization and has low air consumption.
