Two new chalcones(4-brom-8-cyanomethyl-6'-methyl chalcone and 8'-cyanomethyl-6'-methyl-3,4-methylenedioxy chalcone), two new flavones (4' -brom-8-cyanomethyl-6- methyl flavone and 8-cyanomethyl-6-methyl-3' ,4' -methylenedioxy flavone) and two new flavone-8-acetic acids (4' -brom-8-cyanomethyl -6-methyl- flavone-8-acetic acid and 8-cyanomethyl-6-methyl-3' ,4'-methylenedioxy-flavone-8- acetic acid) were successfully synthesized using a appropriate route. The seven-step synthetic approach required easily available p-methylphenol as starting materials and proved more convenient and more effective than previously reported methods. Moreover, the structures of these compounds were confirmed by chemical analysis and spectral data. At the same time, anti-inflammatory activity of two new flavones and two new flavone-8- acetic acids was investigated. The result shows that they have anti-inflammatory activity against dimethylbenzene and egg white in the rat.
