In this thesis, nine lanthanide complexes with EDTB or its derivatives and two zinc complexes with EDTB were synthesized. All these complexes are new compounds. The crystal structures of EDTB 2C2H5OH2H2O, EtEDT ?2C2H5 H ?6H2O, [Zn(EDTB)](NO3)2 ?C2H5OH, [Zn(EDTB)](ClO4)2 ?H2O, [La(BuEDTB)(NO3)2] ?NO3 ?4H2O and [Eu(BzEDTB)(NO3)2] ?N O3 ?0.5CHC13- 2H2O were determined by x-ray diffraction method. The lanthanide ion is ten-coordinated by six nitrogen atoms from one molecule of EDTB or BuEDTB and four oxygen atoms from two nitrate ions. However, in the two zinc complexes with EDTB, the zinc ion is six-coordinated by six nitrogen atoms from one molecule of EDTB, and the coordination polyhedron can be described as a distorted octahedron. The luminescent properties of europium complexes and terbium complexes were studied. It is found that the europium complex with BuEDTB shows the strongest luminescence among the europium complexes, and the terbium complex with BzEDTB shows the strongest luminescence among the terbium complexes.
