In the process of the traditional fabric design, we need to get through the physical prooffabric for knowing the design effect. However, the fabric has a wide range of pattern design,color and yarn. So using physical proofing would be the waste of time and labor. Thedevelopment of fabric CAD technology provides a big convenience for textile design andproduction. It shortens the time proofing, reduces the product development costs significantly,and improves the competitiveness of these products. Hence the research of fabric CAD has greatapplication and market value. The simulation of yarns and fabrics which is one part of the fabricCAD prospects is very important.In order to realistically simulate the effects of a three-dimensional yarn and fabric on thecomputer, this paper proposes a new simulation approach that based on particle systems. Particlesystem is one of the most mature theories in the description of irregular objects in computergraphics. And it is also a best kind of visual effects in the field of natural phenomena simulation.In this paper, the particle system is successfully applied to three-dimensional simulation of yarnand fabrics, and we achieve a realistic simulation of three-dimensional yarn and fabric. Specificresearch works are as follows:(1) We give comprehensive analysis of the research status of yarn and fabric simulationtechnology, and point out its important significance and broad application prospects.(2) We use the point as elementary particle to simulate the fiber based on the morphology ofthe fiber and properties of the particle system. By the process of modeling the geometry of fiber,extracting simulated particle fibers from the bounding box, filling the fiber geometry modelingand adding the fiber texture, we first achieve the simulation of the three-dimensional fiber.(3) We apply the space spiral equation to model three-dimensional yarn based on thegeometry structural characteristics of the yarn. Then we fill and render the model by using theextracted particle from analog fiber. It achieves a three-dimensional yarn simulation effect. Onthe basis of that, we achieve the simulation of the fancy yarn by converting the particle positionand color. To make the simulation of the yarn more realistic, we take the method of the cubicspline interpolation to achieve the simulation effort of the yarn hairiness. Finally, we use the warp and weft knitting and add the lighting to achieve a final simulated three-dimensional fabricsimulation.(4) We use C++and OpenGL to implement the algorithm simulation and describes themethods and results of the process. The experimental results show that the proposed method isreasonable and feasible.Finally, the work on this subject is summarized, and we also make a prospect for futureresearch directions.
