This thesis mainly talked about the process for synthesis of Polysantol, which is a kind of the fragrance components having a valuable sandalwood aroma.The natural sandalwood oil, especially East Indian sandalwood oil has been valued for perfume for thousands of years because of the soft, woody, comfortable odor. As the rare natural resources are expensive and hard to be manufactured, the fragrance industry has therefore made every effort to seek synthetic substitutes.The scheme of synthesis contained three steps:Firstly, aldol condensation of campholenic aldehyde and methyl ethyl ketone to obtain 3-methyl-5-(2,2,3-trimethyl-3-cyclopenten-1-yl)-3-penten-2-one. Secondly, alkylation of the ketone above and methyl iodide to obtain 3,3-dimethyl-5-(2,2,3-trimethyl-3-cyclopenten-1-y1)-4-penten-2-one. Thirdly, reduction reaction to obtain 3,3-dimethyl-5-(2,2,3-trimethyl-3-cyclopenten-1-y1)-4-penten-2-ol, named Polysantol. It’s characterized by H-NMR, GC-MS, FTIR, UV and applied into the fragrance compounds.This thesis also analyzed the physical and chemical charactoristics of Polysantol, and made standard for it.
