The aluminium industry expands day by day in China, at the same time, red mud, a kind of solid by product raised from the alumina refining plant. The red mud is discharged on a large scale, and the accumulated amount of red mud increased year by year. Large amount of red mud was exposed to atmosphere, which not only caused pollution on the around air, soil, surface water and underground water but also resulted in the waste of natural resource.Based the technological procedure of the sintering process from Zhongzhou Aluminium factory, made a careful analysis of physico-chemical property to the red mud after observing to the piled field and theory analysis ,and then, combined with the productive technology of the silicate cement, used many analytical method, such as X-ray diffraction analysis, differential thermal analysis, infrared absorption analysis and electronic scanning analysis, to inquired into the jellification of the red mud in a deep going way.According to the experiment of different kinds of red mud thermally treated at different elevated temperatures and with different mechanical milling, then, taked the red mud as a mixed-material for cement to produce a special kind of concrete, at last , measured and analysed the strength and durability of the concrete. Results of experiment showed that the main crystalline substances existed in aged red mud which was exposed in atmosphere for long time are calcium carbonate and perovskite. Analysis showed that the red mud agglomerate was actually composed of very fine first particles, and most of them being amorphous alumino-silicates. The formation ofβ-C2S was detected to being at 700℃and continually to form thereafter, whereas perovskite remained unchanged during heating. Taked different proportion of the red mud, which was treated at different elevated temperatures and with different mechanical milling, to replace the same quantity of cement to produce concrete. The compressive strength and folding strength of the special kind of concrete corresponded to the reference concrete when the addition of red mud is about 15%. The special kind of concrete has as a good resistant infiltration as the reference concrete, and the performance of low temperature resistance is a little poorer than the reference concrete. However, the large addition of red mud caused the weakening of the whole structure hence to be harmful to the strength development.
