This article compares the portieres in Chinese and Japanese traditional architecture and interior space in a broad sense. First of all, the historical evolutions on the forms of traditional portieres in both countries are traced back. Secondly, different shapes of portieres in the process of evolution are compared from the aspects of the functions, the using and manufacture in order to discuss the relationship among the Japanese portieres, Chinese portiere and the hinder utensils. Thirdly, the ways of expression and the space application of Chinese and Japanese traditional portieres are compared including both similarities and differences. Last, the author's own points of view are put forward focusing on the current existence of Chinese and Japanese traditional portieres and their future succession.
