High molecular weight Poly (Butylene Succinate) was synthesized from Succinic Acid and 1, 4-Butanediol with different catalysts through esterification-polycondensation process. The refractometric analysis were used to study the side reaction of THF yield, this has not published in PBS research before. The viscosity-average molecular weight of the synthesized PBS was being from 5.7*104 g/mol to 8.0*104 g/mol. The best conditions for highest molecular weight PBS were: esterification temperature 150℃, SA/BD ratio 1:1.2, titanium catalyst amount 0.1% of BD molar, and the polycondensation temperature 220℃.The condition of esterification has effection on the esterification rate and the esterification time. The results showed that in this research, the greater the BD/SA ratio, the higher the esterification, the shorter the esterification time; the higher the esterification temperature, the higher the esterification, the shorter the esterification time; the higher the catalyst amount, the higher the esterification, and the catalytic efficiency of Sb2(EG)3 is higher than that of the titanium catalyst. The side reaction of THF yield in esterification of PBS was studied by refractometric analysis first time. The result showed that the greater the BD/SA molar ratio the more THF, the higher the esterification temperature, the more THF. The molecular weight of polycondensation product(PBS) were affected by the esterification conditions. The result showed that when Sb2(EG)3 was used, the higher the BD/SA, the less the molecular of product; when the titanium catalyst was used, the higher the BD/SA, the higher the molecular of product. The property of synthesized PBS was studied. The relationship between Melting Index and viscosity average molecular weight is: Log(MI)=15.817-2.8756log(M); The shear viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate in the different temperatures; The shear viscosity decreases with increasing temperatures in the same shear rate; The activation energy of synthesized PBS increases with increasing shear rate.
