Airborne oil slick fluorescence LIDAR system is featured by high efficiency, real-time monitoring and accurate, it is one of the most advanced techniques in ocean remote sensing. The system can be used to measure the types and thickness of sea surface oil slicks. The similar systems have been used for operational monitoring by many advanced developed countries such as the United States, Canada, German and France, etc.In 2006, the Ocean Remote Sensing Institute of Ocean University of China started to develop a new airborne fluorescence LIDAR system which is used to monitor the types of the oil slick on sea surface under the project of"Research on sea surface oil slick technique by airborne fluorescence LIDAR system with multiple channels".This paper is divided into five parts to describe the progress of the project .In the first part, the basic principles of the airborne oil slick detecting fluorescence LIDAR system including the developments and future of the system over the world. The second part describes the detailed parameters of the hardware. In the third part, software design is introduced, which includes data acquisition program , spectral matching methods and the user interface. Some experiments have been taken in laboratory, and tens of oil fluorescence spectrums have been acquired. The spectrums are used for oil types identification with seven spectral matching methods and the ability of the spectral matching methods is analyzed. The last part gives the summary of the whole description.
