The research on characteristic of random rough surface has extensive application in modern science and engineering. The laser backscattering depolarization characteristic of rough surface is investigated in this paper. The theoretical and experimental researches on backscattering depolarization characteristic are conducted.The development of problems related are reviewed first in front of this paper, and the importance of the polarization characteristic of target is explicated. The criterion of roughness and the functions of rough surface are described. Meanwhile, the effect of multiple scattering from rough surfaces is discussed. The backscattering coefficient and the depolarization formulations of Gaussian rough surface are deduced, and the backscattering simulation of Gaussian rough surface is conducted.The analysis also includes the relationship between depolarization and refractive index of target. Arrangement of experiments is presented at the end. Through analyzing the simulated curves, some followed results are obtained: the characteristic of backscattering depolarization of different material and different surface roughness is different, the depolarization degree increases with incidence angle, and the amplitude becomes flat even declines on some angle.The result of this paper on the backscattering depolarization characteristic of rough surface is valuable to the theory and application of target recognition. And it is also helpful to the further research of target characteristic.
