An accurate knowledge of the equation of state (EOS) at extreme conditions is of considerable scientific interest and attracts more and more attention. With the development of laser technique, laser-induced shock has become a primary means to the research of EOS. In the experiment of EOS based on the H.Hugoniot equation, it is well known that the Shockwave velocity and the particle velocity are the physical quantities needed to be measured. By use of flyer impact method, the particle velocity can be measured indirectly by the velocity of flyer, so the precise detection of the velocity of flyer is significant to the experiment of EOS.The side-on shadowgraph can be used to detect the high-speed motion targets and then to get the information of the targets and their surroundings. In this paper, the side-on shadowgraph system we have set up was described. By use of a streak camera and visible light as probe, the average velocity of the targets was detected using this system. In chapter one, the background introduction is given. After introducing the principle of flyer impact method, the main idea of this work is described. In chapter two, the outline of the experiments of EOS is described. The side-on shadowgraph method is applied, including the detection of the flying interval and the trajectory of flyer by use of visible light and a streak camera, the detection of density of plasma on the target by use of interferometers and a multi-framing camera, and the absolute EOS measurement of low-Z material by use of X ray. Based on the existent means in the lab, the project of my work is described. In chapter three, the instruments used in my work are described, including the streak camera, the probe laser and the internal focusing telescopes. In chapter four, three kinds of thickness of targets, such as 30μm Al, 50μm Al, and 13μm Al with 100μm ablator are chosen. The results of my experiment are described and the corresponding simulations are done by an 1-D hydrodynamic code "Hyades".Chapter five is the part of summary. The results of my experiment are compared with the simulated ones. The sources of error are studied. The influences of the error are been evaluated. The conclusions are reached: the side-on shadowgraph technique is available when the target keeps uniform motion after a short-time acceleration. At last, the further job is planned. The experiment with two-targets consisting of one flyer and one target and the experiment of detecting the free-surface velocity will be carried out in near future. How to raise the accuracy of these experiments is analyzed.
