It is an important process of cytogenetics to study the structures and functions of chromosome, the main carrier of genetic material DNA. In the research of modern genetic , breeding , the analysis of chromosome karyotype is inconvenient, for it is always performed manually and can't adapt to the development of society. With the help of the technology of computer , digital image processing and pattern recognition , We have finished a series of research works , the botanic C-banding chromosome analysis and automatic recognition are realized . The result is satisfactory.In this paper , first , We adopt median filtering to wipe off the noise of the background and make the image clear . then , after adaptive binary image and smoothing, the chromosome position informing is acquired . We adopt edge-tracing method , picking up the edge of every chromosome , separating it from the background . afterwards, With morphologic thinning and removing pseudo-structure and distance-taxis , We have gotten the medial axes ideally.We can get the average integral gray profile and the width profiles along the medial axes with the same steps. Then, the automatic recognition and the karyotype classification are realized through the Bayes classifier based on the character of average integral gray profile and position of centromere .
