This paper mainly discusses and studies the theories of approximating the Earth's exterior gravity field with the method of point mass, from which the author puts forward a improved model for the point mass method taking account of the spectrum characteristic, and establishes corresponding residual combination model. The main work and innovations are:1. The traditional theories and methods for simulating the Earth exterior gravity field have been introduced ,which merits have been discussed also.2. The traditional the theories and methods to approximate the Earth exterior gravity field are introduced, and the merit and shortcoming of these theories and methods are discussed.3. Three kinds of improved points mass models have been established based on sphere approximation and ellipse approximation, direct inter deep and sphere inter deep separately. Calculations using actual gravity data have been performedand, the result has been analyzed.4. Researched the point mass on each layer was researched and analyzed its influence on the gravity anomaly, on vertical defection and on height anomaly is so as to provide the materials for the acceptation/rejection of point mass on each layer with the practical use of combined point mass model.5. Deduced to have regard for a quantity model formula of the frequency chart characteristic, establishs a quantity model that have regard for the frequency chart characteristic, for from now on establish to be able to describe in details the whole frequency chart gravity field model of the Earth exterior gravity field provides to consults beneficially.
