In order to predict the evolution of ozone on time scales of a few days to a week, monthly mean, as well as seasonal variations, reliable measurements of ozone distribution from space (satellite-based measurements) are needed. In contrast with the measurement of backscattered ultraviolet solar radiation onboard satellites, IR radiance measurements in 9.6m spectral channel at various instruments onboard meteorological/environmental satellites allow ozone estimates during both day and night. In this paper, we use IR radiance measurements within 9.6\im spectral channels from Moderate Resolution Spectral radiometer (MODIS) and Advanced Tiros Operational Vertical Sounder (ATOVS) to retrieve total column ozone based on the Operational Retrieval System of National Satellite Meteorological Center. For validating retrieval results, both ground based observation and Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometers (TOMS) ozone measurements are used and ATOVS retrieval results are corrected after the validation. For analyzing the applicability of MODIS total column ozone retrieval to China, MODIS daily and monthly total column ozone data are compared with TOMS ozone measurement. It shows that the correlation between MODIS retrieval results and TOMS ozone measurements is good generally. But the biases of MODIS retrieval results have some regular changes in different seasons and regions.Based upon the TOMS long-time series data products, total ozone amount and its variations with season and yearly differences over China are analyzed. It was found that yearly differences of the total ozone amount are observed in some years, and seasonal changes are clearly observed. By analyzing the month-longitudinal data over Tibet Plateau, it is found that the minimum region of the total ozone amount do exist, with the trend of decreasing continuously recent years, hi the end of this paper, the seasonal changes and characters of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are investigated with ground based observation and TOMS measurements. And the relation between total column ozone changes and weather courses is discussed briefly.
