Using CP embedding tissue section technique and immunohistochemical method, we have investigated the distribution of GABA and GABAergic neurons in the females and males of Camponotus japonicus and compared them and primarily discussed the function of GABA.Protocerebrum shows pronounced GABA-like immunoreactivity. The three neuropile regions of the optic lobe are brown and take on obvious stratification. Three kinds of neurons were related to the optic lobe. They are amacrine neurons, columnar neurons and tangential neurons. Some of them are labelled. Several fiber tracts toward protocerebrum are stained lightly. Kenyon cells are not labelled. The calyces and pedunculus of mushroom body and the a -lobe and 3 -lobe show GABA-like immunoreactivity. The staining of a -lobe are deeper than P -lobe. There exist some GABAergic neurons on both sides of protocerebrum and among optic lobes , antennal lobes and protocerebrum. They are large in size and stained deeply. The labelling of the central body is distinct in that the lower central body shows an extremely dense staining whereas the upper central body contains only few reactive fibers. The protocerebral bridge and the postcerebral bridge show GABA-like immunoreactivity. The distribution of GABA in the deutocerebrum is most abundant. The GABA-like immunoreactivity of antennal lobes are more prominent than dorsal lobes. All olfactory glomeruli are stained deeply. The neurons of antennal lobes are in groups. Approximately 60% of local neurons are GABAergic. Many project neurons and centrifugal neurons are labelled. Giant inner and outer antenno-cerebral tracts and the fiber tract linking the antennal lobe and tritocerebrum are devoid of staining. The commissure interconnecting the two antennal lobes shows weak GABA-like immunoreactivity. Only the thin middle antenno-cerebral tract is labelled. Tritocerebrum and suboesophageal ganglion show GABA-like immunoreactivity. They arestained deeply. The development degree of males' optic lobes outweigh females'. The macroglomerular complex in males' antenna! lobes show prominent GABA-like immunoreactivity. This result implies that GABA is a kind of important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain of Camponotus japonicus. GABA plays a role in mediating sensory system, learn and memory and the activities of motor system. GABA distributes in several parts of the brain densly. And it is more important in mediating local rather than more distant neural interactions. The result and analysis offers academic foundation to the research concerning learn and memory and behavioral biology of Camponotus japonicus and accumulates scientific information for the development of neurobiology.
