Web Gis Development Methodology

AbstractThe spread of Internet provide a new opportunity for GIS, Web GIS has been a hotspot of GIS technology. Nowadays, there are many methods for Web GIS development. How to use suitable methods to build the Internet-based GIS application and how to integrate the existing GIS application according to the criterion of Web GIS is the starting point of this paper.Firstly, the paper introduce the concept, development and application of GIS and then analyse the structure and implement-method of Web GIS in detail. At present, the Web GIS based on CGI/Server API still has been applied widely because this method is steady-going and easy to use. MapObjects IMS, the product of ESRI Inc., is the example of this scheme. The paper analyse the principle of Web GIS based on CGI and give an idea how to integrate the existing GIS application by using IMS. Recently, Component-based Distributed Computing Model has developed rapidly and it has become a main structure of Object-Web. The GIS based on this Model is the new trend of Web GIS. The paper discuss the structure of CORE A, an excellent Distributed Component Model, and further presents a Web GIS model based on CORBA/Java: VIQS Component Model. Lastly, it gives an application instance of this model in the Valley-Information Query System.
