Urban freight transport is part of city traffic, and thus the sound development of urban freight transport makes great progress to the national economy. Otherwise, the poor urban freight transport will impede the national economy. At present, limited to economic development and national conditions, China's urban freight transport is not adveanced enough. Therefore there are many problems seriously hampering the sustainable development of urban traffic and urban economic development. The origin of urban freight transport problems is that structure and size of demand and supply are both imbalanced. Structural imbalance great influences urban road capacity, urban environment and traffic safety. Therefore the study on the demand and supply of the city of freight transport has great insignificance. This paper studies on supply and demand of urban freight transport from the Western economics, which is based on studying on the impact of urban freight transport on the urban development from the perspective of spatial economics. Firstly, according to the concept of urban freight cargo, its function, classification and characteristics are analyzed and summarized. Secondly, based on core-periphery theory of space-based economics, the paper also analyzes impacts of urban freight transport costs on urban emergence and urban structure, and concludes that urban freight costs is the most important factor. Finally, based on supply and demand theories, elasticity theory and equilibrium theories, the paper analyzes classification, characteristics, elastic characteristics, supply and demand equilibrium.
