The concept of competency has been widely recognized by HR researchers and managers since 1960-70s.After dozens of years' development, competency model as well as the research methods based on it turned out to be effective tools in dealing with issues in HR management field such as recruitment, assessment, training and promotion.Firstly the background and purpose of the research was introduced by reviewing the development of the competency concept as well as the methodologies used for the studying of the competency model. A spot sales/ technical support engineer competency model has been built up by studying the spot sales and technical support in Dagon Tech, using Behaviour Events Interview(BEI) and Questionaire. Fourteen competencies an excellent sales representative should possess are: Relationship Building, Impact and Influence, Teamwork and Cooperation, Self-confidence, Conceptual Thinking, Analytical Thinking, Expertise in relative technology and product knowledge, Information Seeking, Achievement Orientation, Concern for Order and Quality, Personal Drive, Interpersonal Understanding, Customer Service Orientation and Respect Individual. Furthermore, the application of competency model in human resource management practice was studied in four modules: recruitment, remuneration, performance and training. The demonstration and adjustment of the competency model was also discussed. Lastly, it was pointed out that competency model needs to be implemented by taking consideration of company's own situation and be continually reviewed and improved.
