As an emergying field, the new economic geography takes the imperfect competition and the increasing returns to scale as foundation to establish the complex mathematical models. It analyzes the spatial agglomeration of the economic activities excellently. This paper references the basic models and theories of the new economic geography. By combining mathematical models with empirical analysis, this paper attempts to explain the following questions: the formation and evolution of the Japan's FDI agglomeration in China, the influential factors of agglomeration, the reasons why Japan's FDI don't increase but decreased in the central and western regions of China, giving the preferential policies inclined to the above regions. This paper also forecasts the future spatial distribution of the Japan's FDI: whether it continues the current core-periphery mode, or it takes mutation in the central and western region. This paper is divided into five chapters, with the main themes of each chapter as follows:Chapter one is introduction. It proposes the main objectives of the research after analyzing the present situation of Japan's FDI in China. At the same time, chapter I also explains the basic methodology and the main ideas of this paper. Chapter two is focused on the theoretical study of the new economic geography. By introducing the core-periphery model, city model and the international specialization model, we could understand the evolution framework of the economic activity agglomeration. These factors, such as the increasing returns, the forwards and backwards linkages of production, market potential, accumulation of casual relationship, and the logic of mutation, are key factors that decide whether there are agglomerations among economic activities. The third chapter adopts detailed figures to explain the phenomenon of the agglomeration of Japan's FDI in China. After experiencing the evolution from the sporadic to a large number, Japan's FDI in China formed three agglomeration areas in quantity, and every agglomeration area formed its own agglomeration mode in industry. In addition, figures indicated that the central and western region always remain the periphery of the agglomeration mode. The fourth chapter studies the influential factors of the agglomeration of Japan's FDI in China from the centripetal force and the centrifugal force. From the core- periphery model, it can be inferred that the interaction of increasing returns, location and the market potential causes the agglomeration and dispersion. In addition, for Japanese manufacturers, these factors such as the industry agglomeration, Japanese agglomeration, keiretsu agglomeration, Japanese government's guide and the congestion play important roles in FDI agglomeration. The fifth chapter is the prediction and conclusion. For the spatial distribution of the Japan's FDI in the future, the author holds following points of view: there isn't clear trend that Japan's FDI move from eastern to the central and western; it will produce level differentiation in industry in the formal three agglomeration areas. In the last chapter of this paper, some inspirations are expected from the three aspects: Japanese manufactures, eastern region, and the central and western regions.Being different from the formal analytical methods that establish econometric model by digitalizing the influential factors, this paper discuss the main issues on the basis of the models and theories of the new economic geography, and expect to explain the spatial evolution and influential factors from the two perspectives: Japanese manufactures and the regions that attracting Japan's FDI. The analysis mentioned in the above chapters carry great political and referential value for China to upgrade industries in eastern region, to find the mutation point in the central and western regions, as well as help decision making of provincial and municipal governments. It is also expected to be helpful for the Japanese manufactures to optimize the FDI resource.
