Research On Urban System And Urban Agglomerations Of Sichuan Province Based On Fractal Theory

As the notion of reflecting the mutual relations and interactions among cities within specific areas, the urban systems and the configurations of urban agglomerations, once advanced, have aroused the great interests of scholars both at home and abroad, and has become an important field in the study of regional development. There are theoretical and practical studies on urban systems and urban agglomerations both domestic and abroad in abundance. In order to bring the inner features and laws of the urban systems and the configurations of urban agglomerations to light, scholars have gradually changed the qualitatively-based way of research to a quantitative method based on the computer calculating. Advanced mathematics' methods and scientific skills have been employed to this field, among which the study and application of fractal theory on the urban systems, the structure and spatial distribution of urban agglomerations is a rather representative one.Therefore, this thesis mainly adopts the fractal theory--a newly appeared way of method, to calculate and analyze the urban systems and urban agglomerations of Sichuan Province, and to describe the features of these systems, the configurations and the spatial distribution of urban agglomerations. By this means, it provides a quantitative support to and consummates the quantitative research on the urban systems and the universality of urban agglomerations in this province.First of all, this thesis, after a summarization of the related theories on the urban systems and urban agglomerations, gives an introduction to the origins of the fractal theory, the universality of fractal phenomenon as well as its application and advantages in the study of urban systems and urban agglomerations. Secondly, on the basis of the description to the status in quo of the urban systems of Sichuan Province by way of traditional methods, this thesis introduces the fractal calculating model to calculate and analyze the configurations and spatial distribution of urban systems so as to depict its features. In the following, it makes fractal measures and calculations to the scale structure and spatial distribution of the three present urban regions in Sichuan Province with the same method, portrays the present configurations and features of these regions, and makes a comparison between them. Finally, the thesis encloses by summarizing the results of the above fractal analysis and pointing out the orientation of further study.
