CLP, an enterprise that is engaged in power investment and operation has concentrated over 60% of its business in Hong Kong. As is required by the slow development of the power market in Hong Kong and the company's commitments to environmental protection, it has to seek more opportunities for investment around the world from the perspective of development. In the meantime, its focus of investment will be shifted from the coal power to the renewable energies so as to reduce its carbon emission. On the other hand, with the annual economic growth rate maintaining at 10% in mainland China for these years, the living standards of the people have been increased day by day, thus it poses a greater demand for electricity. Although the company has entered the power market(primarily of coal power and nuclear power) in mainland China ever since the 1980s, its business has increased slowly for a long time, with only 6% of the total contributed by mainland China. With the promulgation of the national Power Restructuring Program, the Eleventh Five-Year Plan for Energy Development as well as the deepening of the power system reform, the power market of China will open even wider and faster to the private and foreign capital, which will bring opportunities coupled with challenges to the CLP.To begin with, this thesis analyzes the context of the power market in mainland China, the status quo and development trend of the power supply, the current situation and modes of investment in power, the power restructuring as well as the focus and the development prediction of this industry. Based on the analyses of a multitude of data and diagrams, it concludes that the electricity industry in China, with its great vigor, has much potential in the future, and it will enjoy a much wider market for quite a long time, hence a promising investment situation. Then by analyzing the external environment that faces the power market in mainland China, such as the national policies, economic effects, technology situation, requirements of environmental protection, etc. it points out the external opportunities of which the enterprise may take advantage as well as the possible threats. The comparison with the external environment leads to the conclusion that such renewable energy as hydro-power has more advantages over the current coal power. The study about the enterprise's internal conditions, such as its inner finance, culture and its current investment in mainland China, contributes to a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages within the enterprise, and explores development opportunities for it. It points out the kernel competitiveness of the CLP in this region through the SWOT analysis. In the end, it suggests some strategies for its development in mainland China, that is, to increase its investment in power generation in this region; to shift its major investment orientation from the previous coal power to the preferential hydro-power, especially the small- and medium-sized stations; to further develop the nuclear power, with prudent involvement of wind power and shrunk coal power; to apply share participating investment to large scale hydro-power stations and share holding mode to the small- and medium-sized hydro stations; and to adopt share participating to nuclear power while either to wind power and coal power. Apart from making development strategies, it also proposes some major measures and suggestions to the implementation of these strategies.
