Abstract: As the steady development of the whole world, China also steps into a period of fast development of tourism. China has become the fifth tourist destination in the world and international tourism becomes a new economic increasing point and important industry in China. The development of international tourism brings the increase of foreign exchange and stipulates the development of relative industry as well as provides some jobs.To increase the foreign tourist, we should make clear the characteristics of every market segment, so that we can exercise effective measures to develop the market. Backpacking is a market segment of international tourism, but people did not pay much intention to this market in previous study and practice of tourism. The author made investigations of the travel behavior of foreign backpackers in Chengdu, which provides first data to help explore the backpacking market.The paper is constituted of five parts. The first part introduces the background and significance of this study, study situation home and abroad as well as study method and purpose. Part two introduces the theoretical bases of tourist behavior study including influence factor and decision-making process of tourist behavior. Part three is practical study of backpacker's behavior which is the core of this study. In part four the author advances several measures to explore the backpacker market. This paper concludes in part five.The author combines theoretical study with practical study in this paper. First, the author designed the questionnaire and collected the first-hand information for backpackers in Chengdu. Then the author used statistical method to process the data. The study results suggest that backpackers share common characteristics in decision-making behavior, spatial behavior and consuming behavior, according to which tourism organizations and enterprises can put forward some measures to activate the market of backpackers.
