This thesis uses the theories and methods of tourism, ecology and statistics, and contains both qualitative and quantitative analysis. It selects a county scale case and employs relevant theories and methods published in both domestic and foreign journals about ecological footprint model which are designed for sustainable development evaluation,and aims to evaluate the state of sustainable tourism development for Dujiangyan city both theoretically and practically. It has illustrated the concept of ecological footprint and touristic ecological footprint, constructed the calculating models including transportation,shopping,food and beverage, accommodation and sight-seeing. The thesis has also given a detailed analysis of TEF of Dujiangyan city in 2006, and explored the influence of tourist development on the environment of Dujiangyan. At the end, some concrete measures and suggestions referring to food, transportation, merchandise and the mechanism of ecological compensation are provided for sustainable tourism development in Dujiangyan city, and some deficiencies in the TEF model and questions that require further study are also pointed out.The study shows that: (1) The total TEF of Dujiangyan city is 140204.379hm2 and the average per person TEF is 0.0211859hm2. (2) The touristic ecological deficit of Dujiangyan city is 96700.219hm2, the ecological demand per capita is 3.22times as great as the ecological supply. (3) The application of TEF model to the evaluation research of the sustainable tourism development can objectively and accurately reflects the wastage of tourist activities to the natural resource. (4) The transportation and traveling diet are the most important factors that affect the ecological environment while the traveling lodging, the tour, the shopping and the entertainment take little. (5) Although the further dynamic change in TEF is not provided in the study, it can make authentic and comprehensive evaluation to local tourism industries, and also offer a reasonable and scientific proposal for the local government and tourism administrations'decision-making.(6) It is very important for Dujiangyan city to reduce the unit energy-cost through adopting the modern technology, utilize the already-existing resources of transportation, accommodation, entertainment, tourism and etc. with high efficiency, advocate ecological tourism, rural tourism and other energy-saving traveling mode in order to help tourists build rational and healthy consuming notion and foster civilized and ecological tourist behaviors.
