With the development of economic globalization and regional economic integration, the competition between nations and regions demonstrate the trend that urban agglomerations participate in. Through accelerating the development of urban agglomerations which improve the competitiveness of urban agglomeration, thus boost national or regional economic development. It is not only an important experience in the process of modernization of developed nations or regions, but also becoming the inevitable choice of some developing nations or regions to achieve the economic great-leap-forward development increasingly. With urban agglomeration becoming the main competitor gradually, China's "11th Five-Year " plan outline pointed out clearly that it should be taken as a main form of urbanization, and an important indicator of succeeding of urban agglomeration construction lies in whether the urban agglomeration is competitive or not. So, if China would occupy a place in the stage of the international economy, it is necessary to speed up the development of urban agglomerations, and enhance the competitiveness of urban agglomerations, build a number of global and competitive urban agglomerations. At present, there are few researches on urban agglomeration competitiveness in the field of regional competitiveness at home and abroad. The theories are still in the exploratory stage, the study does not mature, its research angle of view urgently needs to broaden and the research depth urgently needs to deepen. It is necessary for China to promote urban agglomeration construction and regional economic development. The thesis takes Zhongyuan urban agglomeration competitiveness as the research object. On the one hand, it expands the areas of study on regional competitiveness; on the other hand, it also provides reference to improve Zhongyuan urban agglomeration competitiveness, thus constructs the "Growth Pole" and "Innovation Pole" in Henan province and central region. The thesis consists of five chapters: the first chapter is introduction. It introduces the background of the selected topics, the purpose of the study, the meaning of the research, current situation of the domestic and international research, the contents and approaches of the research; the second chapter discusses the relevant theory of urban agglomeration. It analyses the definition, connotation, type, characteristics and functions of urban agglomeration, and analyses the relevant concepts discrimination of urban agglomeration; the third chapter is theoretical research of urban agglomeration competitiveness. It includes the connotation, characteristic and influence factors of urban agglomeration competitiveness and analyzes the theoretical foundation of urban agglomeration competitiveness in detail; the fourth chapter is the evaluation index system of urban agglomeration competitiveness. Firstly, the study on domestic and international evaluation index systems of competitiveness have been reviewed, then proposed the evaluation index system of urban agglomeration competitiveness of the thesis, finally introduces a variety of the evaluation methods of urban agglomeration competitiveness; the fifth chapter is the competitiveness of Zhongyuan urban agglomeration, takes Zhongyuan urban agglomeration as the research object for competitiveness, chooses other three urban agglomerations in the central region as comparative targets. Then according to the evaluation index system set up, it analyses the current situation, advantages and existing problems of competitiveness of Zhongyuan urban agglomeration, and puts forward the concrete Countermeasures to upgrade the competitiveness of Zhongyuan urban agglomeration on the basis.
