In 1952, India and Japan established diplomatic relations, and their economic and trade relations were resumed, which naturally became a basis of the bilateral connect. But the development was in a slow way. It's noteworthy that since 1990s, along with economic globalization and regional economic integration, India's economic and comprehensive national power has developed rapidly. In face of increasingly powerful India, Japan enhances India's strategic position in its free trade zone and their economic and trade relations have got potential to develop rapidly. However, the economic and trade relations between the two countries is of a certain scale. It is neither proportionate to their positions in Asia nor to their increasing economic power. What's on earth the economic and trade relations between India and Japan since 1990s? Why did it develop rapidly after 1990s? Which factors did restrict the development? To all these questions, the academia has no systematical coordination and exploration.Based on today's international and domestic circumstances of India and Japan, this paper has a deep analysis to their economic and trade relations in four parts. Part I provides the basic framework of economic and trade relations of India and Japan since 1990s and comprehensively analyses the development survey from three points---- bilateral trade, investment and Japan's official development assistance to India. It also summarizes the unique characteristics of bilateral economy and trade. Part II probes into the advantages of economic and trade exchanges between the two countries. As a developing country, India has a large population, vast territory, abundant labor force and huge market. Along with the rapid economic development, India is of broad prospects for development. As the world's second largest economic power, Japan's development of market economy is mature. Therefore there's a good foundation for the two countries in economic cooperation. They also shares common interests in politics and military. All these commons makes their further expand in economic and trade cooperation. Part III analyses the possible restricts in the process of economic and trade relations between Japan and India, including in politics, economy and cultural areas, such as economic differences in the levels of development, differences in cultural psychology and backward infrastructure in Indian. Part IV gives prospects for bilateral economic and trade exchanges.In this paper, the research results related will provide reference for thorough studies on the economic and trade relations between India and Japan, and it will be of great significance in deepening their bilateral relationship.
