With the era of the economic globalization and the knowledge economy, competition between nations and regions is gradually representing the competition between cities. At the same time, more and more cities are beginning to find their position in the regional economy, and expecting to survive and develop in fierce competition. Compared with foreign cities, the problems that Chinese cities are facing are much more urgent, how to make function position has become a key issue to each city that must be resolved. This paper analyzes urban function position from the perspective of core competence in use of various analytical methods such as quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis and comparative analysis etc, it aims to enrich and improve the traditional position theory, and provides useful reference for the practice of urban function position. Specifically, this paper mainly includes the following four steps: the first step is the theoretical analysis, it establishes the theoretical cornerstone by use of regional division of labor theory and competitive advantage theory, and defines related conceptions; Secondly, it builds the model of interaction between core competence and urban function position, and explains "why" we should make urban function position based on core competence; Thirdly, this paper comprehensively analyzes some problems which exist in the process of urban function position in China and the reasons for these, and provides the judging criteria for function position; Fourthly, this paper makes function position for four sample cities in the Pearl River Triangle by means of "the method of position based on core competence", then provides relevant recommendations and makes conclusions at the end of this paper.
