Semiconductor manufacturing industry is capital and technology intensive industry. Because of that the equipment investment takes a big share of fixed assets, spare-parts storage in company is necessary to ensure the equipment continuously to work and make profit for company. However, since the complexity of spare-parts, it is usually difficult for the administrators to make right inventory decision. The result is that there are too many storage for some spare-parts, which leads to wasting of company resource, or too few spare-parts for some other spare-parts, which cannot keep the production continuously. How to provide a systematic solution and help administrators to make right decision in semiconductor manufacturing industries are the key topics.This thesis describes the requirement for spare-parts inventory management in semiconductor industry firstly, and then introduces the current situation of studied company. By analyzing the requirement and practical problems for a semiconductor company, a set of optimal system for spare-parts manufacturing management is proposed to help company administrators to make the proper decision. It can minimize the capital used for spare-parts with the condition of satisfying the production at a certain service level. Two parts of this system are mainly discussed in this thesis, one part is how to make sure that all transactions can be recorded into the system, and another part is how the inventory model can work and help administrators to make right decision by using the transaction records and production line output data. The aim of it is to find the solution on which parts and how many parts should be stored. The first part of the spare-parts management system designing is supposed to make sure that all transactions must be exactly recorded even in very difficult situations like returnable parts, return parts different from withdrawn parts and some parts need to be tracked one by one with second serial number. The second part of this system designing is to build inventory model to help administrators to make right inventory decision about all parts, meanwhile different parts face different problems as following:shortage of different parts makes different impacts on the production line, demand of some parts is related to certain products and some related to another parts, some parts can be converted each other. After classifying all parts and building different inventory model for them, this system can use the data from the first part of this system, transaction records, to calculate each part-number recommended minimum stock level to meet administrators'expectation of the spare-parts management.In this thesis, a proposal on spare-parts inventory system is summarized to ensure the service level of spare-parts inventory and reduce capital utilization by creatively designing, building and implementation. Such spare-parts inventory system can record all transactions and calculating the reasonable stock to keep production line stably and healthily and in safety.The end is the summary of the thesis. It is pointed out that the record table for all transactions is simple and effective way to satisfy the real requirement for most of large semiconductor chip companies.
