The potential of rural residential land reclamation in Gansu Province is analyzed and evaluated through quantitative and qualitative methods, taking 14 cities (states) and the 86 counties (districts) for the evaluation of unit, by the way of theoretical and empirical studies of the combination based on detailed survey datas of land-use change and Rural population change from 1998 to 2007. The results show that:(1) The total area of rural residential land and the area of Per capita and per household land in Gansu Province have emerged as a trend of overall decline. The per capita rural residential land is 207.71m~2 and the average household size is 927.03 m~2, both of which far exceeded the national standard. It can be seen that Gansu Province has great potential for rural residential land reclamation.(2) Referencing "Standard for planning of town in Gansu province" and the actual situation of Gansu, the theoretical potential of rural residential land consolidation could be sorted out about 152075.38hm~2 by the standard of rural residential land per capita. Referencing "The People's Republic of China Land Management Law" ,with the high standards that can be sorted out about 200459.55hm~2, the low standards of land 157503.93hm~2 by the standard of rural residential land per household.(3) According to the plan selection , the theoretical potential of rural residential land consolidation in Gansu Province is 152075.38hm~2. The potential distribution of different places is uneven, of which Qingyang is the largest one and Jiayuguan is the smallest. The results of calculations based on the potential of Gansu Province, divide the levels of the theoretical potential of rural residential land.(4) The practical potential of rural residential land reclamation in Gansu Province is calculated as 37068.13hm~2, accounting for 24.37% theoretical potential by establishing a comprehensive correction index system. 14 cities in Gansu Province is divided into three potential levels and 86 counties is divided into seven potential levels by statistical analysis software.
