Research On The Contribution Of Railway Transportation To National Economy

As an important part of comprehensive transportation system, railway transportation plays an important role in people's traveling and improving the comprehensive transportation system. With the character of service, it is the basic industry of the national economy, providing raw materials, fuel and other intermediate products transportation and loading and unloading services. The railway transport industry has a significant effect in promoting and simulating the economic sectors in the industrial chain. Therefore, the development of the railway transport industry has a great bearing on the nation's sustained economic development and social stability.Despite the economic importance of railway transportation to the nation, relatively few studies have examined the contribution to national economy. Moreover, these studies are conducted based on qualitative analysis and few of them are done quantitatively. In addition, in order to reduce the adverse effect of the economic crisis in 2008, we have invested a large mount of money in infrastructure, especially in railway transport industry to expand domestic demand and keep social stability. Based on the economic background and related theories, this article is to study the contribution to national economy and aims to illustrate the actual contribution of the railway transport.First of all, this paper summarizes the theories and methods of economic growth both at home and abroad, and comes to conclusions. Secondly, after introducing the railway economic and industrial characteristics, it explains the mechanism of contribution to national economy from the perspective of industrial structure, investment and strategic respectively. It explains its form from the aspects of national economy and social benefits. Then in the third chapter it analyzes the relationship between the railway transportation and social development, including the relationship between railway investments, railway passenger, railway freight and national economy. Their interdependence extents are examined. We make the qualitative analysis from four aspects, as protection transportation of important goods and personnel, improving the economy along the railway line, promoting the industrial structure, and good for urban development. The last but not the least, based on input-output model, it calculates the railway transport contribution to national economy, including the added value of railway contribution to national economy, the employment contribution to society and the ripple effects. Then we come to the conclusions.From the measures and calculation results, we can see that the railway of China plays an important role both in promoting national economic growth and alleviating the pressure of employment, especially its former promoting effects reflecting the pillar status in national industries. Therefore, in order to keep the economic stability, we should continue to strengthen the infrastructure status of railway transport industry, and accelerate its transition pace to modern service industry.
