Two methods, the impact of population, affluence and technology (IPAT) on the environment and logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) are applied to analyze contributions of technological progress and engineering technology on pollutant emission reduction, respectively. The purpose of this study is to calculate the contribution of engineering technology on pollutant emission reduction over2005-2010. Industrial chemical oxygen demand (COD) and SO2are chosen as two pollutant indexes in nationwide research. The result shows that the contributions over2005-2010of engineering technology for reduction of COD and SO2are62.6%and62.7%, respectively. In addition, results of annual contributions exceed80%, except in2009because of the US financial crisis of August2007and other possible reasons. The strong contributions indicate that engineering technology greatly contributed to protecting the environment. In addition, contributions of different influence factors in engineering technology are also researched, including cleaner production, end-of-pipe treatment, and resource recycling. The result shows that contributions of cleaner production are 75%(COD) and62%(SO2), and total contributions of end-of-pipe treatment and resource recycling are25%(COD)and38%(SO2). On the basis of nationwide research, key industries including chemical industry, electric power industry, building materials industry, iron and steel industry are also applied the IPAT and LMDI to calculate the contribution of engineering technology on pollutant emission reduction over2005-2010. The result shows that contributions of engineering technology on reduction of COD and SO2are77.1%and77.1%in chemical industry,79.4%on reduction of SO2in electric power industry,77.56%on reduction of dust in building materials industry,72.85%on reduction of COD in iron and steel industry. This study has referential value for governments to promote engineering technology using its various implementation approaches in future environmental policies.
