There are abundant bentonite (Montmorillonite, MMT) resources in china, but the development and utilization of it is in arrears. In the current polypropylene (PP) is the second plastic varieties after polyethylene (PE), But PP also has shortcomings like:mold shrinkage, flammable, low-temperature toughness.Therefore, studies on MMT and PP with extensive research value, in this subject the organic bentonite (OMMT) preparation and its application in PP were studied, enhanced both the material properties and its value.In this study, the raw is bentonite which comes from Shandong Weifang, we get the OMMT by wet purification, sodium and organic processing. The impact of different types of modifiers and conditions in sodium and organic to OMMT were studied. At last, the optimum conditions to prepare OMMT through experiment we determined. The experiment results show that the organic cation can effectively organic bentonite, wherein complex useing1827and caprolactam is better, andt the layer spacing of OMMT is2.44nm.The PP/OMMT and PP/PE/OMMT nanocomposites were prepared by using the polymer melt intercalation method. Testing the composite structure, interface morphology, mechanical properties, flame retardant properties, processing and performance propertiestest characterization by XRD, SEM, electronic universal testing machine, horizontal and vertical burning instrument, limiting oxygen index tester, torque rheometer. The results show that:PP macromolecular chains can be inserted into the layer spacing of OMMT, forming a peeling intercalated nanocomposites, and its flame retardant properties and mechanical properties have been significantly improved; OMMT can reduce the balance torque of the PP at200℃, the melt flow properties of the system is enhanced, thereby facilitating to the molding process; OMMT applied in the PP/PE blends can form PP/PE/OMMT nanocomposites whose layerr spacing is5.60nm, compared with pure PP/PE alloy, the mechanical properties of PP/PE/OMMT nanocomposites improved significantly and fluidity minor enhancemented.In order to further study of the flame retardant properties of OMMT, OMMT were used with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to flame-retardant PP. The test showed that:in the same level of the flame retardant, the amount of flame retardant APP can be reduced significantly after adding OMMT, and OMMT can effectively suppress the phenomenon of anti-dripping in the combustion process also.
