Metal cutting is a basic method of processing mechanical parts, which is very significant for the machinery manufacturing. With green manufacturing proposed, improving the cutting performance and the workpiece surface quality has been paid a lot of attention. Micro-texture structure is introduced into the surface of the cutting tool and textured tools are designed and manufactured in this paper. The effect of different texture on the cutting performance, the surface machining quality of workpiece and the relevance between Three-dimensional characterization parameters and the cutting performance has been researched.Two groups textured tools with micro-pit array on the rake face are designed and manufactured through Laser marker YLP-F10. By controlling the diameter, depth and area density of micro pit on the rake face, two groups of the textured tool obtain the same surface arithmetic average height Sa. All the textured surfaces were measured by non-contact3D optical profiler Talysurf CCI Lite and characterized by ISO25178.The wettability of the cutting fluid on the textured surface was measured by SL200KS contact angle meter. Then, cutting experiments of45#steel are conducted using the non-textured and textured tool on a CA6140lathe with Kistler9257B three-dimensional dynamometer, and the effect of the different texture and cutting parameter on the cutting force, frictional characteristics for the rake face, the machined surface roughness and the chip deformation has been discussed by changing the cutting speed and feed velocity. The results show that appropriate surface texture can improve the cutting performance. The textured surface which possesses a higher speed of cutting fluid spread has a better cutting performance. The effect of the textured surface on the cutting performance is influenced by the cutting parameters. The synergy of the diameter, depth and area density of micro pit is crucial for improving the cutting performance. To coordinate theses texture parameters, the relevance between Three-dimensional characterization parameters of the surface morphology Sku Ssk、 Vvv、 Vvc、 Sdv、 Sda、Spd and the cutting performance has been researched which can provide the basis for the tool surface design.
