Series disc extruder with the excellent mixing performance is a new kind of mixing equipments. In recent years, it has got more and more attention in the field of polymer processing. In this paper, based on the development of CPJ30/70series disc extruder, structural optimization of the series disc extruder, the influence of main process parameters (speed and feed rate) on the mixing performance of series disc extruder, the design of the new aster-shaped disc component and experimental research on mixing performance of the series disc extruder were studied.By means of orthogonal experiment and numerical calculation, respectively, fan-shaped disc, aster-shaped disc and the disc of bowl mill groove shape were studied. Through a comprehensive analysis of the simulation results, the optimal geometric parameters of the three kinds of discs were obtained. It was the first time to build up the geometric model of the real mixing section consisting of different configurations of revolving discs, stationary discs and screw blocks. The influences of the main process parameters (speed and feed rate) on dispersive mixing, distributive mixing and axial mixing performance of series disc extruder were studied. The extensional flow field was introduced into the design of the new kind of aster-shaped disc. The mixing performance of the new aster-shaped disc and traditional aster-shaped disc were comparatively analyzed. The influences of the main process parameters (speed and feed rate) on the mixing performance of series disc extruder were experimentally studied. By means of experiments to compare series disc extruder and co-rotating parallel twin-screw extruder, mixing mechanism of series disc extruder was further analyzed.
