As one of the important indexes of evaluating the effect of blasting, the rock fragmentationdistribution of muckpiles has an important impact on the subsequent production process ofmines and mining production efficiency. There are two categories commonly used in this stage:the direct method and the indirect method. Sieving method and empirical formula method aremost widely used among them. Although these methods can make a effectively quantitativeevaluation on the distribution of rock piles to a certain extent, some shortcomings anddeficiencies are still existing. On the basis of empirical formulas, studying the rockfragmentation distribution of muckpiles by introducing the fractal theory and using photographytechniqueand Image-analysis technique which are popular inthe current studying which aims atmakinga quantitativeevaluationonrock pilesmuch convenientlyandscientifically.Based on researches related to the rock fragmentation distribution of muckpiles at homeand abroad and the actual muckpiles, this paper compares commonly used empirical formulasand selects Gates-Gaudin-Schumamn’s empirical formula for further study. To compensate forthe deficiency of selecting parameters, this paper establish a rock fragmentation distributionmodel of muckpiles with fractal theory and citing fractal dimension which is a eigenvalue thatcan reflect the degree distribution. This paper attempts to simulate photographing process onrock piles by collecting rock samples. According to the captured images, we can use Matlabwhich is a software having a powerful image processing tools function and then get the rockdistribution data of rock pile by such technical approach as binarization, background-off,smoothing, sharpening, edge detection and so on. Processing and analyzing the obtained data, the fractal dimension which can reflect the degree distribution of muckpiles can bestudied:D=2.5247. With this data, we can complete the rock fragmentation distribution model ofmuckpiles set before, and show intuitively in the form of data table of under cumulative percentofthe distribution. The fractal dimension which reflect the information of muck piles can be moreconveniently and accurately determined with photography technique and Image-analysis technique and the powerful function of image processing in Matlab. It is practically useful andcan better compensate for shortcomings—time-consuming and labor-intensive—of sievingmethod and for deficiencies which the distribution parameters is hard to determine in traditionalempirical formula. In the meanwhile, analyze the study results and give out the possible errorfactors which may affect the distribution of muckpiles. Hoping this study could activelypromote the further study of fractal theory using in blasting areas, continue to improve the rockfragmentation distribution model of muckpiles and analyze the distribution of rock pilesquantitativelyandaccurately.
