Amino acids are essential structural units and physiological active substances of life. The transition and main group metal coordination complexes with amino acids areparticularly important in various metabolism and physiology biochemistry process.Meanwhile, they also have wide applications in bioscience, medical science, agricultureand novel functional materials based on their unusual functional properties. Therefore, thestudy on coordination chemistry of metal complex with amino acid has become a hot spotfor scientific research with showing a significant meaning both in investigating thebiological effect of metal ions and in exploring the advanced material for the purpose ofsustainable development. In the present paper, the studies of the metal complexes with amino acids have beenreviewed, a series of the metal complexes with amino acids have been synthesized insolution. The paper mainly includes the following three aspects:1. The transition metal ions, Cu(II), Zn(II) and Mn(II) coordination complexes withγ-aminobutyric acid have been synthesized and characterized by IR spectrum, X-raypowder diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)spectroscopy. The suggested structures of these metal complexes have been concluded.Interestingly, one of these complexes, the copper complex{[Cu3(C4H9NO2)2(NO3)2(OH)2(H2O)2](NO3)2·2H2O}n, has been studied by the X-ray singlecrystal diffraction analysis. Its crystal structure and magnetic property have beeninvestigated.2. The main group metals, lithium, sodium and calcium coordination complexes withglycine, L-arginine and L-histidine as ligands have been prepared, which have beencharacterized by IR spectrum, X-ray powder diffraction analysis and elemental analysis. The coordination complexes with amino acids except for the mention above have beenalso synthesized and waiting for the further investigations. The results show that the γ-amino acids can form complexes with diverse structuresand certain functional properties. The single crystals of the main group metals complexeswith amino acid ligands are difficult to grow, because of their closed-shell propensity, morerestricted electron counts, and fewer available oxidation states. The development directionof this field in the future should be overcoming the difficulties in crystal synthesis process, guided by function, systematically carrying out basic research of coordination chemistryand supramolecular chemistry on metals with amino acid ligands, and applied research inrelated fields such as life science, medicine, agriculture, and new materials.
