In the1960s, oil-absorbing materials appeared and then began a rapid development.With the rapid development of the chemical, oil and other industries, waste water, wasteliquid and emissions caused serious pollution on the environment, high oil-absorbing resinsgradually developed.Azo-bis-isobutyronitrile (AIBN) is a common initiator and vesicant. In this paper, aseries of new type of polymer oil-absorbing resins was synthesized successfully using animproved suspension polymerization, that is adding vesicant AIBN. The resin porestructure has been well improvement, so oil absorption properties of the resin has alsobeen well improved. Using Octadecyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate as rawmaterials, three kinds of resins (BM, SM, SBM) was synthesized. Using single factorand orthogonal experiments, the effects of monomer ratio, the amounts of initiator andcross-linking agent, water-oil ratio, reaction time, the amounts of blowing agent and thedose and adding time of AIBN were all evaluated to determine the optimum synthesisconditions and the reaction route. At the same time, the structure, performance andoil-absorbing mechanism of the oil-absorbing resin was discussed in this paper.Binary BM-N′oil absorption magnification was up to40.17g.g-1, saturationed within10hours, the oil retention rate was more than95%, has a good sustained-release and surfaceoil recovery performance, good thermal stability, began severe decomposition after330oC.The results of scanning electron microscopy also proved that SM-N has more porestructures and a larger pore size,which is conducive to the oil absorption of resin andconsistent with the experimental results. Three yuan SBM-N′oil absorption rate of toluene was quickly, saturationed within5hours, and oil absorption magnification of diesel macromolecules was up to17.73g.g-1.The molecular diffusion was simulated by the Fick diffusion equation, the results showthat, the diffusion behavior of small molecules firstly close to CaseII diffusion, and thenfitted the non-Fick’s diffusion. Using the first order kinetic equation and Schottersecond-order kinetic equation linear fitted the the swelling behavior of the resin in the smallmolecule oil, the results showed that the swelling behavior of the two binary resin ofswelling kinetics in the small molecule oil was more in line with first-order kinetics.Based on the model of a three-dimensional reticular spatial structure of the polymer,mechanism of oil absorption of the resin was studied.Results of the adsorption experimentusing toluene and n-heptane measuring by gas chromatography showed that oil absorptionprocess was a diffusion process of small organic molecules in the resin. Although the resinoil absorption magnification was greatly different on small molecules of different polarities,there exists no selectivity for the adsorption of small molecules.
