To ensure people’s life and the reliability of the equipment, it is of great significance to monitoring the operating state of the hoist which is one of the important monitoring equipment.This paper investigates the basic structure and working principle of the hoist. The analyses conclude the working process of each system of the hoist and the functional requirement. To analyze all the possible faults in the operation process, a fault tree of the hoist is also set up and analyzed. The optimal monitoring parameters set was identified based on the relationship between each fault factor.This paper shows that the conventional monitoring system facing many problems include complex network forming and lower stability of data transmission. To overcome these disadvantages, GPRS is used in data transmission. In this paper, the feasibility of data transmission via GPRS was thoroughly analyzed and verified and the process of the system forming was discussed in detail. In addition, the system overall scheme was designed include the software development language and the hardware. Finally, the practical application of the system was verified and introduced.The design of the remote monitoring system was composed of hardware design which conclude equipment selecting and platform developing and software development.The software and the database of the system use VB language and SQL server2008respectively. The functions of the software include data transmission, remote monitoring, data processing and storage. The real-time data is selected and sent in the prescribed form via GPRS and then receipted and showed in network center. Besides, the software has some automatic functions, include autostarts, automatic sending, automatically hang up, automatically log back, failure warning and remote configuring.Field application shows that the system operate stable and reliable, complete the design objective and reach the standard for industrial application. At present, the system has been applied in a coal mine successfully.
