The present dissertation studies the synthesis of water-based epoxy resin by a two-step method. Through the reaction between diethanolamine and epoxy resin, the first step is to prepare solubilizing agent which has solubilization to epoxy resin. A series of solubilizing agents was prepared by means of adjusting the mol ratio of reactants, reaction temperature and reaction time. The optimal reaction conditions were obtained through screen test. Adding the above solubilizing agent during the modification process, the second step is to prepare water-based epoxy resin through ring opening reaction and carboxyl introduction reaction to partial epoxy bonds by sodium glutamate. A line of water-based epoxy resin was prepared by changing the mol ratio of reactants, reaction temperature, reaction time and amount of solubilizing agent. Infrared spectrograph, emulsion stability and emulsion state were examined to optimize reaction condition. Several conventional curing agents were screened to obtain the best one.The water-based epoxy coating with pigment of Al-Mg-Zn alloy was designed and studied. The property of the specimens of the modified water-based epoxy coating on carbon steel was studied by routine test, electrode potential monitoring, polarization curve test and AC impedance test. The assistant agent, pigment volume concentration (PVC) and coating thickness were also examined. The results show that the developed sacrificial water-based epoxy coating with Al-Mg-Zn anodic pigment has excellent mechanical and corrosion resistant properties.
