SBR latex was hydrogenated by redox system consisting of hydrazine hydrate, hydrogen peroxide, and boric acid, additionally including gel inhibitor X. The effect of the X to the hydrogenation was studied.When the amount of the gel inhibitor is1%(based on dried rubber), the effect of various process parameters such as amount of hydrazine hydrate, boric acid, hydrogen peroxide, reaction temperature and reaction time on the degree of hydrogenation was investigated.We obtained the disciplinarian of these hydrogenation parameters to the hydrogen degree and gel content. The fact proved that X is a highly effective gel inhibitor. With the gel inhibitor, we obtained the rubber gel content less than3%.And the micromolecular structure of HSBR was characterized with IR and NMR spectroscopies. The mechanical properties of HSBR with97%hydrogenation before and after air aging were analyzed. HSBR/PP blends were made using melt mixing methods. Effect of HSBR content in HSBR/PP blends on impact strength, tensile strength, yield stress was studied. The variation of impact properties of samples with different HSBR content0 percent,12percent,15percent,20percent,30percent after radiation by Cobalt-60, radiation content50kGy was examined. Morphology of HSBR/PP blends with30percent HSBR was also analyzed using Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM).It is shown that the double bonds in SBR molecules are saturated with hydrogenation. HSBR is a new thermoplastic elastomer with excellent aging resistance and mechanical properties.In our study, we found that HSBR can disperse well in PP phase in blend with30%HSBR, these two polymers have good compatibility. Besides, HSBR can not only improve toughness of PP, but also enhance the radiation resistance of PP.
