In order to study the safety differences between gypsum stacks and tailings pond, the seepage computation and dam stability were studied by compared gypsum stacks and tailings pond. The calculation models were based on a gypsum stacks in Hubei province. The main research works are as follows:(1) Tailings ponds were introduces simply, and the project background was explained. The shear strength and other mechanical parameters of the gypsum were obtained through mechanical test. The mechanical parameters of tailings were obtained by referring to the relevant standards.(2) The flood hydrograph was obtained by hydrological computation with proper hydrological parameters. The flood regulating capacity was calculated according to the topographical map. The discharge capacity curve of flood drainage system was calculated by its dimension parameters. Based on the three curves, flood regulating calculation was carried out by numerical solution, and flood control safety was analysed according to the specification requirement. Flood regulating calculation result showed that the flood control safety met the specification requirements.(3) With hydrologic computation and flood regulation storage capacity computation, the water level of the gypsum stacks can be known in normal condition and flood condition by flood regulating calculation. The seepage calculation model was established, and the change of the saturation line between gypsum stacks and tailings pond was studied. The results showed that saturation line depth of gypsum stacks was deeper than tailings pond with the lower level in the stacking dam.(4) The dam stability calculation model was established, and the saturation lines computed were used, the dam stability between gypsum stacks and tailings pond was studied by Swedish circle method. The results showed that the stability safety coefficient of gypsum stacks was higher than tailings pond, and greater than the standard value.
