Since the tailing dam is a complex natural and manual system,it's very meaningful to study the stability which can not only protect the enterprises and the estates of residents downriver but also keep the social stability. The paper is based on the tailing dam of Grand Bay in Yichang Hubei and it analyses the factors that influenced the stability, the physical parameter, flood control capacity and the flow of penetration. The main research contents of the paper are the following:(1)We choose a appropriate way from the angle of theory to study whether the flow of penetration of the tailing dam would meet the requirements. Finally we find the strength reduction method of finite element is more suitable for simulating the calculation and analysis of the stability of the flow of penetration.(2)After referring to related literature,we get the physical and mechanical properties of the tailing dam through the experimentation with the geologic report and we analyse the strength of changes of the tailing dam when the moisture content is different.(3)Selecting the frequency of floods(p =2%? p =1%? p =0.5%? p =0.2%)to check the drain floods system and judge from the flood flow whether it would meet the requirements when the intercepting ditch works and out-of-works in 72 hours during the draining. Then we have to find out the dangerous point of the main raining period and the minor raining period during the flood whether or not meet the requirements.(4)We use the Plaxis software to build a model since the flow of penetration of the tailing dam is hard to analyse when it rains. We judge the safety of the tailing dam from the changes of saturation and shifting of sliding surface by the simulation which assumed that the maximum rainfall is 226.1mm per year and raining for 36 hours and non-raining for 48 hours.
