Starfish are Echinodermata, Asteroidea. Starfish are numerous，there are5ordersand2000species，distributed in the Ocean around the world. North Pacific has themost species. The vertical distribution of starfish in the intertidal zone to the sea depthof6000meters. In our country the starfish is mainly distributed in the Bohai Sea andthe Yellow Sea, more than100kinds. The starfish is traditional Chinese medicinalmaterials, its taste salty, neutral in nature, with tranquilize the nerves, and stomachpain, thick intestinal diarrhea. Starfish can be used to treat a variety of diseases suchas thyromegaly, stomach pantothenic acid and diarrhea and so on.Starfish as the traditional Chinese Medicine， the earliest recorded in theCompendium of Materia Medica. Starfish produced in the East China Sea，about thesize of a inch, shape flat and round, back to black, abdomen white crisp, the shaperesembles the cuttlebone, text articles such as mushroom. It’s mouth under the belly,eat the fine sand, five feet beside the mouth. At present, there are three kinds ofstarfish can be used as medicine. They are Craspidaster hesperus, Asterina pectiniferaand Asterias. There are many types of starfish, up to2000species. Few reports on thestarfish pharmacodynamic material basis. In terms of quality standard，there isconfined only to the simple shape discrimination. There are no report about thethin-layer identification and general inspection.In order to explore the effective method of starfish quality standard，we collecteda variety of starfish and as the research object. We conducted a study on the materialfoundation of the starfish, and isolated from a kind of steroid sulfate from starfish. Onthis basis, we studied the starfish TLC, and set up a simple, fast, reproducible, specificTLC method. At the same time, we conducted a comparative analysis on25kinds ofstarfish. The result will be used in traditional Chinese medicine starfish qualitystandards to provide a reliable scientific basis.We use85%ethanol ultrasonic extraction, by means of silica gel column chromatography, thin layer chromatography, gel chromatography and highperformance liquid phase separation method，we gained the steroid sulfate standardfinally. Using the spectral analysis methods, and the Pope, ultimately determine thestructure of the compound.We tested the process, extraction of different products launch system, viewingcondition, TLC distance, sample quantity, time, pre saturated thin layer plate andother factors. Through the study of the25batch of starfish, establishes the method ofstarfish exclusive TLC. We use steroid sulfate as the reference, to identify the sameingredients on the thin layer chromatography. This method has the advantages ofsimple operation, fast, good reproducibility, specificity, can distinguish betweendifferent species of starfish. At the same time, we follow the Pharmacopoeiarequirements, the starfish general term (moisture, ash, extract, heavy metals) wereexamined individually.For the further study of starfish, in particular the establishment of qualitystandard of starfish, provides certain reference. Study on quality standard of thestarfish provides reliable data for the selection of marine Chinese medicine. Researchdata of the starfish become the foundation of some of the traditional Chinese medicineresources.
